Certified translation for documents used in the United Kingdom
Submitting documents to a school, employer, clinic or authority in London or elsewhere in the United Kingdom? For many private, educational and medical purposes, a certified translation bearing the PRAVIS bureau seal is enough. Post-Brexit requirements depend on the particular procedure, so we check the purpose and say plainly when a qualified or sworn translator is required instead.

Documents translated for the United Kingdom
Documents commonly sent to us for UK use include birth, marriage, divorce and change-of-name certificates; degrees, diploma supplements, school reports, transcripts and reference letters; medical reports, treatment histories, prescriptions and vaccination records; employment contracts, employer letters, bank statements and proof of address. We also translate police clearance certificates, correspondence, powers of attorney, and records needed for renting, insurance or professional recognition. For families in London, a typical pack may support a child’s school enrolment, transfer a medical history to a GP or private clinic, or explain foreign qualifications to an employer.
Since Brexit, EU citizens encounter more situations in which they must evidence family relationships, education, employment or previous residence. That does not mean every document automatically needs an apostille or a translator with a particular membership. A university, UK ENIC, employer, bank, Home Office caseworker and court may each publish different requirements. Send every page, stamp and reverse side, and tell us the intended recipient. We can identify the sensible translation scope and flag an apparent format issue, but only the receiving UK body can set the definitive document list for its procedure.

Bureau seal versus a sworn or qualified translator in the UK
A UK certified translation is not a direct equivalent of a Polish tłumaczenie przysięgłe or another continental sworn translation. It is normally a full translation carrying a certification statement that it is accurate, together with a date and the translator’s or agency’s name and contact details. PRAVIS supplies that statement and its bureau seal. This format is often accepted by schools, universities, private healthcare providers, insurers, employers and other private recipients when their instructions do not impose a special standard. We reproduce the document’s structure, identify seals and illegible passages, and never alter facts found in the source.
The expression “sworn translator” is used inconsistently in the UK because there is no central UK institution that appoints sworn translators in the same way as Poland and a number of other European jurisdictions. However, a specific Home Office application route, court, solicitor, professional regulator or education provider can ask for a qualified translator, CIOL or ITI membership, notarisation, an affidavit, or prescribed wording. The recipient’s current written instructions matter more than a generic label. If the PRAVIS bureau certification does not meet those instructions, we will say so before payment and recommend using a translator who holds the required UK qualification or membership.

Send files nowApostille notes for the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom and Poland are parties to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. A Polish or other foreign public document presented to a UK authority may therefore need an apostille issued in the country where the document originated. Conversely, the UK Legalisation Office issues apostilles for eligible British documents intended for use abroad. An apostille authenticates a signature, seal or the capacity in which an official acted. It does not certify that the document’s statements are true, does not translate the document and does not guarantee that a receiving body will accept it for a particular purpose.
Do not purchase legalisation merely “just in case.” A school, private clinic or employer may have no need for an apostille, while a civil-status matter, court process or another formal procedure may expressly require one. Ask the recipient to confirm its rule in writing before spending money. If an apostille is required, the practical sequence is usually to obtain it first and then have both the underlying document and apostille wording translated as one pack. PRAVIS can explain that sequence and translate the apostille, but we are not the competent authority and do not issue apostilles ourselves.
How the process works from our Wrocław headquarters
Upload a clear scan or photograph of every page and briefly state whether the document is going to or coming from the UK, the language pair, purpose, city and intended recipient. A London school, clinic, university, employer and Home Office route can all apply different rules, so include a link or screenshot of any translation instruction you have received. We check legibility and scope, quote the price and turnaround, and state clearly whether a bureau-certified translation appears suitable or whether the instruction points to a qualified translator or a different certification route.
After approval, a translator prepares the text and the bureau reviews it before adding the accuracy statement and PRAVIS seal. We deliver a certified PDF electronically. If the recipient requires a paper copy with an original seal, we send it by post or courier from the Wrocław HQ to London, elsewhere in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, or to another international address. Paper originals are not usually needed to begin; where a particular process requires us to work from or return an original, we agree a secure mailing arrangement in advance. Delivery of a translation does not imply approval of the underlying application.
Frequently asked questions
Is the PRAVIS bureau seal enough for documents used in the UK?
Often, yes. Schools, universities, employers, private clinics and insurers commonly accept a certified translation with an accuracy statement and agency details. You should still check the exact recipient’s current instructions before ordering.
Do I need a sworn translator for the Home Office?
There is no single answer for every application. Home Office guidance normally states the certification elements for the relevant route, and some cases or related bodies may require a qualified translator. Send us the current instruction and we will honestly assess whether our format matches it.
Did Brexit change certified translation requirements?
Brexit created more situations in which EU citizens need to evidence status, family links or qualifications, but it did not create one certification rule for every document. The particular process and receiving organisation determine the requirement.
When does a document for the United Kingdom need an apostille?
When the UK recipient expressly requests one for a foreign public document. The competent authority in the document’s country of origin issues it. PRAVIS can translate the document and apostille but does not issue the apostille.
Can you post a paper translation to London?
Yes. Once agreed, we can post or courier a paper copy bearing the bureau seal from our Wrocław headquarters to London, anywhere in the UK, or another international address.
Will a certified translation guarantee my UK visa or status?
No. We are responsible for an accurate, properly presented translation. The relevant authority alone decides a visa, immigration status, admission, professional recognition or any other application.
